Sadara Chemical Wins Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu Award for Best Environmental Performance for 2020

Jubail Industrial City, Saudi Arabia, June 6, 2021 -- Sadara Chemical Company (Sadara) has won first place in the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu (RCJY) Environmental Performance Award for 2020 for the best environmental performance in the Primary Industry category.
The event was held today during the RCJY’s annual World Environment Day celebration. The annual award was presented at a ceremony organized by the RCJY and was dedicated to 2019 and 2020 winners, since the awards were postponed the previous year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The ceremony was led by Eng. Mustafa AlMahdi, CEO of the Royal Commission for Jubail and Yanbu, and attended by a group of business leaders and senior executives from various companies in Jubail’s industrial community including Sadara.
The RCJY’s Environmental Performance Award event began in 2006 as an award dedicated to basic industries and was expanded to include most of the city’s industrial activities. The 2019 and 2020 awards were presented to companies with the best environmental performance not only according to the standards of international organizations, but also according to more stringent standards set by the RCJY, to provide a safe and clean environmental climate for residents and employees in Jubail Industrial City.
Sadara’s CEO, Dr. Faisal AlFaqeer, accepted the award on behalf of his company. Voicing appreciation to the RCJY for its encouragement and continuous support, he said: “From its construction, startup and commissioning phases through normal operations, Sadara has maintained a sharp focus on environmental protection. During the design phase, the best available technologies, as well as unique environmental monitoring solutions and management systems, were incorporated into the company to minimize adverse environmental impacts.”
Dr. AlFaqeer expressed appreciation for the efforts exerted by the company's employees and contractors and for their effective contributions to these achievements, saying: "This award is the result of our collective efforts and of strict implementation of effective policies in the field of environmental management. We take all the necessary steps to seek constant improvement of our environmental performance, optimizing use of natural resources and adopting the Circular Economy concept, as reflected in Sadara’s ongoing support for the local community in alignment with sustainable development goals and Vision 2030.”
Wayel Osailan, Sadara’s Environment, Health, Safety and Security (EHS&S) Executive Director, noted: “As we progressed to normal operations and to-date, Sadara has incurred zero violations from the environmental governing body, the RCJY. I’m so proud of this achievement; we’ve been waiting to be eligible to apply for these awards and demonstrate our world-class excellence and efforts.”
Sadara was recognized as the best environmental sponsor company for its community outreach efforts for 3 years in a row: 2016, 2017 and 2018. In 2019, Sadara was certified as a Responsible Care® company under the RC 14001 and ISO 14001 environmental management systems. Sadara’s commitment to environmental protection will continue to be its top priority. Recently, the company received the Operation Clean Sweep® (OCS®) Partner Certificate from the Gulf Petrochemicals & Chemicals Association (GPCA), as the first company in the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) to pledge to implement the OCS initiative.
